Our Bio Carbon Wales animal bedding is designed to go far beyond conventional straw or wood shavings. Produced on our Welsh family farm, we use a mobile pyrolysis unit to convert ash dieback–affected timber into high-quality biochar on-farm, closing the loop on waste and creating a genuinely regenerative product. This biochar is then blended into our wood chippings at around 10%, creating a bedding that is drier underfoot, longer-lasting and far more effective at locking in moisture and nutrients. Scientific research into biochar has shown its ability to absorb ammonia and other volatile compounds, helping to reduce odours, improve air quality in housing, and support better respiratory health for livestock and small animals. Cleaner, fresher housing can mean calmer animals, less mucking-out, and a more pleasant working environment.
We also recognise that not all animals – or housing systems – are the same, so we offer tailored bedding mixes to suit your needs. Our standard product is a premium wood-chip and biochar blend for cattle, sheep and horses, but we can also produce a fine sawdust/biochar mix for small animals such as poultry, rabbits and other pets, or a coarser, chip-based mix for larger livestock and deep-litter systems. In every case, the biochar works like a natural sponge and filter within the bedding: binding moisture, reducing odour, and helping to stabilise nutrients in the manure so that, once used, it becomes an excellent soil improver rather than a waste problem.
